Posted by Moscow Links on Feb 7, 2010 in Gigs

Uriah Heep

Uriah Heep’s by-the-books progressive heavy metal made the British band one of the most popular hard rock groups of the early ’70s. Formed by vocalist David Byron and guitarist Mick Box in the late ’60s, the group went through an astonishing number of members over the next two decades – nearly 30 different musicians passed through the band over the years.

Babyshambles (UK) @ B1 Maximum Jan. 31

Posted by Moscow Links on Jan 30, 2010 in Gigs

Babyshambles

Formed in spring 2004, just as the Libertines were beginning to fall apart, Babyshambles became the main vessel for Peter Doherty’s poetic, chaotic rock when he was ousted from the Libertines for his increasing drug use and erratic behavior. Babyshambles released their self-titled debut 7″ in April 2004, and settled on the lineup of Doherty, guitarist Patrick Walden, bassist Drew McConnell, and drummer Gemma Clarke by that summer. That fall, things went relatively smoothly for the band, with a sold-out U.K. tour and the release of a second single “Killamangiro” on the Libertines’ former label, Rough Trade. But by December, the band had to cancel or halt shows because Doherty was unable to perform; one of these sudden cancellations sparked a riot at the London Astoria. Clarke left the band early in 2005 and was replaced with new drummer Adam Ficek. Despite the band’s ongoing tumult – which included Doherty’s arrest for allegedly assaulting and blackmailing documentarian Max Carlish (these charges were dropped that spring) – Babyshambles began work on their first album. Teaming up with former Libertines producer Mick Jones, the band worked on the album through the spring and summer of 2005 and released the single “F**k Forever” that August as a teaser for the full-length.

Top Friends @ Cult

LF is taking another night at Cult from January on and we are reviving our Top Friends party. Top Friends is originally from Berlin. We brought this party to Moscow about a year ago. We started of at Justo, then moved to MSPRKT (before it even was called so) and now its at home at Cult, your favorite Yum Yum location.

Come join us for a party with good music (80s Hip Hop, Ghetto Funk, Bloghouse, Baile Funk, Baltimore, Electronic Mashups) and invite your Top Friends from your favorite internet community to join. Bring along your real life friends and make them meet your virtual friends, but remember, just bring your Top Friends ;-)

The Latinos among you come early to hear a special session of Mashups (at Midnight), I just received from Argentina. Great stuff with lots of Latin influences, even traditional, like Gumbia.

Reel Big Fish (USA) @ GlavClub Jan. 15

Posted by Moscow Links on Jan 9, 2010 in Concerts, Gigs

Reel Big Fish

Based in Huntington Beach, CA, Reel Big Fish was originally a trio comprised of vocalist/guitarist Aaron Barrett, bassist Matt Wong, and drummer Andrew Gonzales. At that stage, the group was a conventional rock band with pop-metal leanings that covered both classic rock and Top 40 songs – essentially, it was music designed for frat parties. After several months, the band discovered ska and decided to bolster its lineup with the addition of horn players. Reel Big Fish had a difficult time maintaining a stable horn section, and it took several years before their final lineup – featuring Tavis Werts (trumpet), Scott Klopfenstein (trumpet, vocals), Grant Barry (trombone), and Dan Regan (trombone) – fell into place. This definitive incarnation of Reel Big Fish recorded its self-released debut album “Everything Sucks” in 1995. “Everything Sucks” became a word-of-mouth underground hit in ska-punk and college circles, which gave the band enough leverage to sign with the indie label Mojo Records. The label’s president, Jay Rifkin, and former Oingo Boingo bassist John Avila co-produced “Turn the Radio Off”, which marked Reel Big Fish’s first album for Mojo. “Turn the Radio Off” was unleashed in August 1996, and over the next year, the group continually toured in support of the album’s release, expanding their fan base all the while.
